Week 1 - Homework

We were asked to continue the thumbnail sequence and continue research, another part of our home work was to look for existing VCD precedents and on topic precedents.

Below are examples of precedents I found on the web as part of homework.

Week 1 - Session 2: Debate and Word List Exercise

For the second class, we began with the class debate and it went on pretty well. The non speakers have also participated in critiquing other group's speaker.

We did not win the debate versus the against change, but I do think our speakers Bobbie, Troy and Sam have done really well. They were articulate and was able to answer the main points against the other team. On my opinion, the other group has also done well but they do have the advantage on the topic. The main reward we achieved was to change at least a couple's opinion.

We did also did the Word & Concept list for the topics that helped us begin with our thumbnail sequence.

Week 1 - Session 1: Group Exercise - Pro change in NZ flag

Another activity from the first class was to divide the class into four groups and tackle one of the topics of Ihi Wehi project.

For our group, we were assigned for Pro NZ flag change. Most of us haven't really gave thought about this national topic. The activity led us to brainstorm ideas why we must change our flag. Also, for our homework, our group have shared research online. We were also able to assign our speakers for the next class' debate.

By doing the research, I can now understand the importance of this topic. At first, my opinion rest entirely on the 26 million dollars that can be assigned to another social community. But by doing my part on the research and our group discussion, my opinion has changed that maybe changing the flag will help boost our national pride and identity.

Week 1 - Session 1: Introduction to Rhetoric and Persuasion

For the first class, we were introduced to the Project Ihi Wehi:Rhetoric and Persuasion and discussed the different rhetoric devices that are present in existing VCD works.

I was able to use this new learning immediately thru our group exercise. We were asked to identify the different devices present on a set of images. Now, I have a new-found perspective on some design work and can now identify the devices myself.

It also occured to me as a designer, I have been collecting some images on my mobile phone. I have concluded this images have used rhetoric devices and was made for a target audience like me. Below is a sample of a poster i found from instagram, I remember saving this picture because it spoke to me.

The rhetoric device present on this image are juxtaposition and subversion (replacing the head with explosion). The use of text also help emphasis the intent of the image.
